April 2020 Step by Step Challenge
Welcome to this month’s Step by Step Blog Challenge! Some of our customers have asked, if we would consider creating a simple monthly blog challenge to:
1) Help with ideas to create digital scrapbooking layouts that are quick, but that may also challenge them to use new tools or techniques.
2) Challenge scrappers to get their mojo back for digital scrapping, as many had stepped away from this hobby for various reasons.
3) Provide an inspirational layout as a scraplift starting point to create their own page, and provide instructions for creating the page.
You asked and we were happy to deliver…so welcome to the Dandelion Dust Designs’ Step by Step Challenge!
Each month during 2020 we will bring you a brand new Step by Step Challenge here on the blog. We are excited to host these challenges to help you in any way that we can with digital scrapbooking and preserving your memories.
As the name implies, this challenge will provide you with step by step instructions using a list of ingredients, that you must include on your challenge layout. Just as in cooking or baking, you need a list of ingredients and specific instructions to make a yummy recipe, so we will provide you with both, to help you create an amazing layout of your own, and perhaps teach you about a new tool or trick along the way.
Challenge Participation Requirements
Your layout must include everything in the list of ingredients posted in each month’s challenge. You may add more ingredients if you wish.
Your layout must be made using at least 80% of Dandelion Dust Designs’ products, so grab those DDD Kits from your stash.
After your page is completed, post it to one of the following places:
You must post your layout before 10:00pm PST on April 30, 2020.
The winner of this month’s Step by Step Challenge, will be announced on May 15th, here on the blog when the May 2020 Step by Step Challenge is posted.

Let’s Get Started
First we begin with this month’s inspiration layout. It was created by our amazingly talented Creative Team Artist Diana and she used our Goodnight Kit. Isn’t Diana’s page so cute!
2 Solid Papers | 2 Patterned Papers | 1 Photo | 1 Frame | 1 Tag | 1 Splatter | 1 Scatter | 3 Different Flowers | 2 Different Leaves or Leaf Stems | 4 Unique Elements (Like the bunny/stars/button in the Inspiration Layout)
In whichever program you use to digitally scrapbook, open a 12″ x 12″ or 3600 x 3600 pixel layer and place one of your patterned papers onto the layer to create your background. Create 1 of each shape: Circle, Triangle, Square & Rectangle. Cover 2 of your shapes with one of your solid papers, cover 1 of your shapes with your last solid paper and cover the last shape with your last patterned paper.
Place your circle on the left side of the page, having the circle run off your page. Place your rectangle on the right side of your page, and layer your triangle and square on top of it. Next, place your photo on top of the layered shapes on the right side of your LO and place a frame over it. Open the flowers, leaves or leaf stems, tag, splatter, scatter and unique elements on to your page. Duplicate one of your flowers once, one of your flowers twice and one of your flowers five times. Duplicate one leaf/leaf stem three times and the other leaf/leaf stem two times. Duplicate one unique element four times.
Let’s begin putting the elements into place. With the flower you duplicated five times, place two of them on the left side of your page with the circle. Place one of the flowers you duplicated three time in this cluster and place one of the flowers you duplicated once in the cluster as well. Add one of each of the leaves/leaf stems. Beneath your cluster add the splatter and scatter running them partially off the edge of your page. Tuck the tag into your cluster and add some journaling, and then add 2 of your unique elements (like the stars in the sample page) to complete the left side of your LO.
Moving to the right side of your page, place two of the leaves/leaf stems, one of the flowers you duplicated twice and one of the flowers you duplicated five times, overlapping and tucking them around the left corner of your framed photo. Add three more unique elements to round out this cluster. Tuck one of the unique elements under the framed photo towards the lower left edge and place another of the unique elements on the right color of the frame. Duplicate the splatter and scatter you used on the left side of your page once, and place in near the lower right corner of your framed photo allowing it to run off the right edge of your page.
Take your last three leaves/leaf stems and overlap them over the right hand corner of the framed photo. Tuck a couple of your remaining flowers under the leaves and place the rest of the flowers on top of the leaves to create a cluster. Add your last unique element to finish off this cluster. Your layout is ready for the shadowing to be added, which you can do for everything above the patterned background paper, except for the splatter (I typically don’t shadow splatter elements, since I don’t want them to look like they are lifting off the page.) Congratulations – you’ve just created your page for this challenge! Please don’t forget to post it.
One page will randomly be selected to win a $10 Gift Certificate to Dandelion Dust Designs’ Store at GingerScraps and the layout may be shared on our blog and social media accounts.
At the end of 2020, one lucky participant who completes at least 9 out of 12 Step by Step Challenges, will be offered a Guest Creative Team Spot for two months on our Creative Team in 2021.
* The monthly prize winner will be announced here on the blog on the 15th of each month.
