February 2020 Step by Step Challenge
Welcome to this month’s Step by Step Blog Challenge! Some of our customers have asked, if we would consider creating a simple monthly blog challenge to:
1) Help with ideas to create digital scrapbooking layouts that are quick, but that may also challenge them to use new tools or techniques.
2) Challenge scrappers to get their mojo back for digital scrapping, as many had stepped away from this hobby for various reasons.
3) Provide an inspirational layout as a scraplift starting point to create their own page, and provide instructions for creating the page.
You asked and we were happy to deliver…so welcome to the Dandelion Dust Designs’ Step by Step Challenge!
Each month during 2020 we will bring you a brand new Step by Step Challenge here on the blog. We are excited to host these challenges to help you in any way that we can with digital scrapbooking and preserving your memories.
As the name implies, this challenge will provide you with step by step instructions using a list of ingredients, that you must include on your challenge layout. Just as in cooking or baking, you need a list of ingredients and specific instructions to make a yummy recipe, so we will provide you with both, to help you create an amazing layout of your own, and perhaps teach you about a new tool or trick along the way.
Challenge Participation Requirements
Your layout must include everything in the list of ingredients posted in each month’s challenge. You may add more ingredients if you wish.
Your layout must be made using at least 80% of Dandelion Dust Designs’ products, so grab those DDD Kits from your stash.
After your page is completed, post it one of the following places:
You must post your layout before 10:00pm PST on February 29, 2020.

Let’s Get Started
First we begin with this month’s inspiration layout. It was created by our super talented Creative Team Artist Sarah and she used our newest kit called Toadally In Love. Isn’t this a great page of Sarah’s husband and wait until you read the fun story behind this photo!
4 Solid Papers | 2 Patterned Papers | 1 Flower | 1 Leaf
1 Brad/Flair/Bottle Cap | 2 Coordinating Elements (like the frogs shown in the Inspiration Layout) | 1 Banner | 1 Photo
In whichever program you use to digitally scrapbook, open a 12″ x 12″ or 3600 x 3600 pixel layer and place 1 of your solid papers onto the layer to create your background. Take another solid paper, use your Rectangular Marquee Tool or a Crop Tool to cut out a rectangle shape, drag that cut-out piece on to your background paper and place on the left side about 1/2-3/4″ from the left edge.
Grab your 2 Patterned Papers and again using your Rectangular Marquee or Crop Tool, create a long rectangle shape, larger than your first rectangle, but not as wide. Do the same thing with the second patterned paper, making it just a bit longer and a about half the width of the last rectangle shape you created. Place both of the papers on top of the first rectangle paper and move them to where you like them creating a stack of 3 papers.
Select your third solid colored paper and with the Rectangular Marquee or Crop Tool, cut out another rectangle shape slightly smaller than the first rectangle paper shape. Place this on top to the 3 stacked papers you just created. Place your photo on top of this layer and resize the photo, so the rectangle shape you just created, peeks out from beneath the photo, creating a matting/framing effect under the photo. Take your last solid paper and with the Rectangular Marquee or Crop Tool, cut a square shape. Place this paper just beneath the photo and matting layer so it looks tucked under these layers.
Let’s decorate your page! Place your banner on top of the square paper you just placed and resize it to fit the square. Beneath it add some journaling, to describe your photo. Add the brad, flair or bottle cap to the upper left corner of the photo and place it depending on your photo. Drag your first coordinating element on to the page, and group it with the brad, flair or bottle cap, overlapping it onto the photo and paper layers under it. Up next, bring in your leaf and if necessary duplicate it. Add the leaf or leaves to the lower right corner of your photo and place where appropriate for the photo you selected.
Add your flower, duplicate it, and make the duplicate flower a bit smaller than the original flower. Place the large flower first and then the smaller duplicate flower next overlapping slightly on top of the leaf/leaves. Lastly, add that second coordinating element and place around the flowers/foliage to form a cluster.
At this point your layout is looking good, but appears very “flat”. This is where you will need to add shadowing to everything above the solid background paper you placed. Congratulations – you’ve just created your page for this challenge! Don’t forget to post it.
One page will randomly be selected to win a $10 Gift Certificate to Dandelion Dust Designs’ Store at GingerScraps and the layout will be shared on our blog and social media accounts.
At the end of 2020, one lucky participant who completes at least 9 out of 12 Step by Step Challenges, will be offered a Guest Creative Team Spot for two months on our Creative Team in 2021.
* The monthly prize winner will be announced here on the blog on the 15th of each month.
