January 2020 Step by Step Challenge
Welcome to the first Dandelion Dust Designs’ Blog Challenge! Some of our customers asked during 2019, if we would consider creating a simple monthly blog challenge to:
1) Help with ideas to create digital scrapbooking layouts that are quick, but that may also challenge them to use new tools or techniques.
2) Challenge scrappers to get their mojo back for digital scrapping, as many had stepped away from this hobby for various reasons.
3) Provide an inspirational layout as a scraplift starting point to create their own page, and provide instructions for creating the page.
You asked and we were happy to deliver…so welcome to the Dandelion Dust Designs’ Step by Step Challenge!
Each month during 2020 we will bring you a brand new Step by Step Challenge here on the blog. We are excited to host these challenges to help you in any way that we can with digital scrapbooking and preserving your memories.
As the name implies, this challenge will provide you with step by step instructions using a list of ingredients, that you must include on your challenge layout. Just as in cooking or baking, you need a list of ingredients and specific instructions to make a yummy recipe, so we will provide you with both, to help you create an amazing layout of your own, and perhaps teach you about a new tool or trick along the way.
Challenge Participation Requirements
Your layout must include everything in the list of ingredients posted in each month’s challenge. You may add more ingredients if you wish.
Your layout must be made using at least 80% of Dandelion Dust Designs’ products currently available in our GingerScraps Store, so grab those DDD Kits from your stash.
After your page is completed, post it one of the following places:
- GingerScraps Dandelion Dust Designs’ Gallery
- Dandelion Dust Designs Facebook Fan Group
- To Your Instagram Page tagging us @dandeliondustdesigns
You must also post your layout link below in the comments before 10:00pm PST on January 31, 2020.
The winner of this month’s Step by Step Challenge, will be announced on February 15th, here on the blog when the February 2020 Step by Step Challenge is posted.
Unfortunately, if your Instagram Account is private, and we are unable to see your page, you will not be eligible to win the prize, but you can post it to the GingerScraps Dandelion Dust Designs’ Gallery or our Facebook Fan Group where we can see it, if your Instagram Account is private.
Let’s Get Started
First we begin with this month’s inspiration layout. It was created by our super talented Creative Team Artist Bernice and she used our newest kit called Tidy Up. Isn’t this page beyond adorable – simple, soft and striking!
2 Solid Papers | 3 Patterned Papers | 1 Frame | 1 String | 1 Button | 2 Different Flowers | 1 Leaf/Foliage | 1 Ribbon | 1 WordArt/Title | 2 Pics
In whichever program you use to digitally scrapbook, open a 12″ x 12″ or 3600 x 3600 pixel layer and place 1 of your solid papers onto the layer to create your background. Place 1 of your patterned papers on top of the solid paper, and make it 1/2″ shorter at the top & bottom.
Place your string on the page anywhere you would like. Use your Polygonal Lasso Tool to draw out 3 shapes, each on a different layer, or place 3 shapes you already have in your stash onto your page. Add your last 2 patterned papers and clip them to the shapes. Place them where you would like, overlapping them on top of the string slightly. Place your pics next and frame them, placing them on top of the string and overlapping them slightly.
Add your two different flowers to your page, creating a cluster with the two of them for the first cluster and then duplicating one of them to be used alone for the second cluster and place on top of the string where you would like them. Place your leaf/foliage on the page next, and drop it just below your flower layers so if forms the base of your cluster. Duplicate it, and put both into place to create your two clusters along the string.
Add your button on the layout and duplicate this element once. Place both buttons where you would like them on top of the string, so they appear to be “holding” the string in place. Next, create a square on a new layer using the Rectangular Marquee Tool or add a square shape from your stash and fill it with a color using the Paint Bucket Tool. Place your second solid paper on this shape and clip it to the shape you created to make your tag. Select one of your favorite fonts and add your journaling/information to this tag.
Duplicate one of your flowers and the foliage. Place this foliage in the lower corner of your page and add your ribbon next. You’ll then add your word art or title on top of the ribbon and you’ll place and position the flower last.
At this point your layout is looking great, but appears very “flat”. This is where you will need to add shadowing to everything above the first patterned paper you placed, including that paper. That’s it!
One page will randomly be selected to win a $10 Gift Certificate to Dandelion Dust Designs’ Store at GingerScraps and the layout will be shared on our blog and social media accounts.
At the end of 2020, one lucky participant who completes at least 9 out of 12 Step by Step Challenges, will be offered a Guest Creative Team Spot for two months on our Creative Team in 2021.
* The monthly prize winner will be announced here on the blog on the 15th of each month.
