Favorite Finds: Side B

Some afternoons have a plan. Others quietly make one for you.

It started with a single record.

Not because it was a favorite, necessarily, but because it had been a while. Long enough that the jacket felt almost unfamiliar in your hands. Long enough that you couldn’t quite remember which song was on Side A and which one waited on Side B.

The needle settled into the groove, the room filled with music, and suddenly the afternoon had somewhere else to be.

One album became another.

You remembered where you found one in a little record store during a weekend trip. Another had been playing constantly the year you moved into your first place. One still carried the faint outline of an old price sticker that somehow survived every move.

It’s funny how songs remember things we forget.

A few notes can put you back in a car you haven’t owned for twenty years. An album you barely thought about anymore suddenly knows every word to a summer you do remember. Even the songs you used to skip sound different after enough time has passed.

Streaming lets us listen to almost anything.

Records ask us to stay.

To choose an album, put it on, and hear what comes next instead of deciding what comes next. There is no shuffle quietly rearranging things. No endless list of recommendations waiting to take over.

And eventually, someone has to get up and turn the record over.

Maybe that’s part of why people never really stopped collecting them.

It’s never only about the music. It’s about the albums we bought, borrowed, inherited, carried from one house to another, and somehow kept even when there was no longer anything convenient about keeping them.

They take up space.

They need looking after.

And we’re keeping them anyway.

So it helps to have somewhere comfortable to listen. A chair you don’t mind staying in awhile. Good speakers. A little light for reading liner notes. Somewhere nearby for the albums that are waiting their turn.

Before long, the first record is finished.

Another sleeve comes off the shelf.

Then another.

The afternoon that supposedly had other plans has now disappeared almost completely, but an album you hadn’t heard in years has found its way back into rotation.

Sometimes that’s a pretty good trade.

Because every collection has a Side B worth rediscovering.
